The Aviation Museum will be open at Bush Barn, Silver Hill on 27 May between 2 and 5. Exhibits dating from WW1 to the present day are on display. Light refreshments available. Free parking and admission, donations acceptable for upkeep of the Museum.

On Monday 28 at 8pm at Bush Barn, there will be a speaker who will talk about “The Vulcan and Some of its History”. Free admission but donation box for upkeep. For those interested in aviation and attendant technology, this will prove a most enjoyable evening -all ages welcome.

The Aviation Society would like to thank all who supported the jumble sale on Saturday which raised £265. Others are planned for the future. The enthusiasts who maintain this Museum are to be congratulated on their dedication -with supportive ladies behind the scenes- for providing such an interesting local feature which is growing into a wider known attraction; there is so much to see so allow plenty of time when visiting it. Hurst Green was chosen to host the Kent and Sussex Art Fair at the week-end.

A Hampshire based art gallery “Quiddity Fine Art”, was permitted to hold it’s exhibition in a private house which displayed a wide variety of art form, sculpture, painting and carving, much of it inspired by seascape and included traditional, impressionist and avant-garde. The organisers report the event well supported and sales of some of the items on show were quite high.

The poet Arnold Wall thought cricket “an art”, among the other virtues it possesses. At the week-end the manly art created at Drewett’s Field by Hurst Green Cricket club and their weekly opponents, saw the game veers Bodium lost by 5 wickets. This was a last minute fixture as the game arranged against Offham had to be cancelled. GuyBallard and Mike Yeardley both scored 29 with David Baldock making 20. The next game is against Netherfield. Why not pop along to the lane behind the clock tower for an hour or so to see some good village cricket?

Once part of Iridge Place, the Field was given to the village by the Drewett family many years ago before that it was known as “The Park”. It is nice to know that Iridge Place has been sold and will soon become, once again, a family home.

It is unlikely that the new owners will follow the tradition of the 1850s when school boys were suspended outside an attic window by a rope in order to clean blocked gutters! During the war many large houses were requisitioned by the military for housing troops Iridge Place being no exception. However, the owner, at the approach of the troops and their commander, rather unpatriotically, locked the gates and stood guard with several large wolf hounds and a rifle. The house was never used for troop accommodation apparently! They don’t breed ‘em like that anymore.

Perhaps that is why there is a police alert to warn people in the area of mobile phone thieves who are operating eg in estate offices and public places generally. Youths, of Asian appearance, have been seen acting suspiciously before phones disappear. Police advice the public not to leave bags open topped, or leave phones in open pockets. Lock these things up or keep them in sight at all times when with stargaze in offices, shops etc.

The Friendship Club meets at 2 pm at the Village Hall on Black Bin Day.

Jack Lusted (01580 880 408) deals with church matters for Holy Trinity Hurst Green and is the popular vicar to the school. After the meeting on 22 it is hoped a positive report will be forthcoming for the future of Hurst Green’s lovely church.

It is very gratifying to receive phone calls from people who are Hurst Green natives, but have moved away, saying how interested they are to read about the village and express the wish to attend village functions whenever possible or to supply information of interest to those living in Hurst Green. Let’s hope some one can be found to take up the pen, in the form of the email monster, and continue to report news from Hurst Green when your present correspondent has left for pastures new.

Events for the Jubilee are a Barn Dance on June 1. Tickets from Technique or at the door of the Village Hall.

On June 2 the procession of floats leases Orchard Farm Shop at 12.15. The Fete in the Station Road playground starts at 2 pm. Live band, stalls, beer tent, hog roast and Bouncy Castle etc. Flags out everyone! To help ring 860
