Hurst Green village voice

The Twinning Group are appealing for host families to accommodate visitors from Ellerhoop from May 17 until 21. Bed and breakfast plus a packed lunch would be required. Host families are invited to take part in the events planned for the guests.

On Monday April 2 the Short Mat Bowling finals were played out. In the Ladies section the winner was Amy Beckett who just beat runner up Ella Clarke in a good competition. The Men’s final was particularly interesting as the two finalists were the youngest Tom Browne and the oldest Mr. Maurice Bogue. Tom emerged as the winner after Mr. Bogue conceded victory to him after what had been a close match but which, towards the end, suddenly collapsed for the senior player. The awards are to be presented shortly. This sport is very relaxing to watch and a pleasure to play. Why not phone Maurice and join the teams? Good companionship is guaranteed. 01580 860 336.

Holy Trinity church is looked after by the vicar of Salehurst the Revd. Jack Lusted 01580 880 408. Services are held at Salehurst at 11 am and in Fair Lane Church Room, Robertsbridge at 9am for short Communion Service.

The nearest R.C. church is at Burwash and the Methodist church meets in Hawhurst at 10.30 in All Saints Lodge.

Gifts from Hurst Green are sent to our troops in Afghanistan if left at Technique Hairdressers. Thanks to all who donate and please keep giving items to be dispatched; sweets, washing gear, crisps etc. are all acceptable.

The fete is planned for June 2 and a procession of floats will be a feature with a £50 prize for the best one. Start thinking about what you or your organisation can prepare. The day before there will be a Barn Dance. Full details of all these events will be published but please note the dates now.

The mobile library calls alternate Friday afternoons at the Village Hall.

Every other Tuesday ,”Black Bin Day”, a group meets for chat, refreshment and entertainment at the Village Hall 2.30. Everyone welcome, retired or thinking about it!

Our contiguous sibling village, Etchingham, is smaller than Hurst Green but life there is in the fast lane with many people taking part in various organisations and being altogether very active. Hurst Green Parish Council works very hard for Hurst Green and other people have tried to start-up several things to bring residents together in fun and community. This has often been less successful than hoped. In part this may be caused by Hurst Green lacking a focal point, eg. church or post office. Also, the A21 creates a kind of Grand Canyon for socialising geographically. Comedy Capers bucks this trend but there are other efforts to “get things going” for the benefit of residents of all ages. Please try to support what is organised and specially the Summer events for the Jubilee and the fete and the shop complex.
