Hurstpierpoint

Sunday, 2 September, The 1918 Lloyd George Garden Party, Danny House: The sun shone very warmly for the whole day and almost a thousand people, including musicians, dancers, Harris's Funfair, food and drinks stalls and displays of military uniforms etc, gathered on the lawns in front of Danny House. The glorious statue of Prime Minister Lloyd George dancing the hornpipe was unveiled by Colin Prickett, the longest standing resident of Danny House, amidst great applause. It was Hurstpierpoint at its very best; and now for the Festival!

Vision of Peace, this year’s Festival Art Exhibition, again curated by artist Penny Hopkins, opens in Holy Trinity Church on 15 September. One of the themes of this year’s Festival is ‘Peace’ to mark the end of the First World War and many other events do the same. The children of St. Lawrence School are again taking part. Last year, their paintings of Wolstonbury were greatly admired, and we look forward to seeing their artwork again.

Kevin Carey’s new play, Winning the Peace, commissioned by the Festival, has four performances between 24 and 30 September. Hurst Players’ production of Habeas Corpus is on during the first week.

Hurstpierpoint Girls’ Brigade: leader, Margaret Taylor, invites girls from the age of four years to come along and join the fun. They meet every Wednesday in term time at the Methodist Church Hall. It is run by Christian leaders and includes stories, sing songs, crafts and all sorts of games connected with the theme of the badge the girls are working for. Girls can usually gain a badge every half-term. The younger girls, Explorers (Reception to Year 3) and Juniors (Year 4 to 6) get stickers for their sticker book every time they come to GB. There are two older sections: Seniors (Year 7 to 9) and Brigaders (Year 9 and above) and, as they complete their Journals, more badges are awarded. Their identity is a GB polo shirt and sweatshirt and Subs are £22.00 for the term. All the girls are awarded their prizes and trophies at our Awards Evening in July. Other activities including camping, competitions and taking part in a swimming gala. Explorers meet at 5.15 pm to 6.30 pm and the other sections at 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm. At the moment, there is no waiting list. Term starts on Wednesday12 September so come along. For further details, please contact Margaret Taylor on 01273 832286 or 077 99 66 00 43 or [email protected].
