Hut 'agreement' fury

BEACH hut owners in Bexhill have accused Rother District Council of reneging on a deal to freeze yearly rates.

The group got in touch with the Observer this week following cabinet's decision, just before Christmas, to increase hut fees by 10 per cent this year.

They say it is contrary to an agreement reached with Rother.

Hut owners say they accepted a rise to 200 a year in 2006 but an 'understanding' was in place that fees would only rise with inflation over the next four years.

Peter Skinner, chairman of the East Parade Beach Hut association, said: "I have been inundated by complaints from members.

"We went to the council last year as an association and lobbied for an agreement, so I think to put it up this year is a bit strong."

Mr Skinner said staff and council members had changed since then, but he believes the alleged agreement should stand.

He added: "I spoke with Madeleine Gorman (Rother head of amenities) and had a long conversation with her. She said she wasn't party to that agreement.

"They just said they needed to raise more money."

Madeleine Gorman said: "The annual charge for beach huts was set at 200 in 2006 and no increase was made in 2007. The charge has increased by 10 per cent to 220 in 2008 but this is still 63 less expensive than our neighbouring authorities."
