GREETINGS: Well. Now we have changed the clocks and November has arrived, I feel justified in quoting Thomas Hood. In his poem about November, he has this to say : No sun, no moon, no morn, no noon, No dawn, no dusk, no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member, No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruit, no flowers, no leaves, no birds - November.

CHURCH NEWS: The 9.30 am Parish Eucharist will be led by Fr. Barry Carter. This is the 4th Sunday before Advent. There will be a service of Thanksgiving for the Departed at 4 pm in St. Thomas Church. This is an opportunity for anyone who has suffered a bereavement over the past year, to gather and remember those who have died and light a candle in their memory. On Monday we recall Zacharias and Elizabeth, parents of John the Baptist. And on 8th, we remember all the saints and martyrs of England and Wales.

WEATHER: The forecasters told us that it would get much colder, and they were right! Even when the sun shines, it is not so hot as previously. Sunrise on 3rd is at 6.52, it was 7.05; sunset is 16.28, it was 18.24 in BST. I can’t quite agree with Thomas Hood about there being no flowers. We have not yet had a frost, and so the dahlias are still colourful, chrysanthemums are coming out, and I have a lovely autumn flowering camellia in full pink flower. The roses are pretty good too.

ROBIN HOOD BONFIRE: As previously mentioned, the bonfire this year will be on Sunday 4th November. The procession will begin to form up at 5.15, and will go from Workhouse Lane along the main road to the bonfire site at the Robin Hood Inn. The A259 will be closed from 5.30 and will reopen as soon as the procession route is clear of participants. Fireworks are scheduled to start at 6.30 pm. Admission gates open at 5pm and there will be a handstamp system for re-entry so that people can pay early and, if they wish, watch the procession at the road side, and will not need to queue up again on the way back in. Admission prices are held again at £3 for adults and £1 for children. All the money raised goes to local causes. Visiting societies have been asked not to drop fireworks on the procession route.

CRAFT FAIR: This will take place on Saturday 3rd November from 10am until 2.30 pm in Icklesham Memorial Hall. A lovely assortment of locally made crafts will be on sale, and lots of unique gift ideas for all the family. Refreshments will be on sale, including a selection of home- made cakes. Everyone is welcome and there is plenty of free parking. Hope to see you there – NB all tables are taken.

QUEEN’S HEAD: The live music on Sunday will be played by Grundy. This begins at 4 pm and goes on until 6 pm.

SCHOOL: The staff and children returned for term 2 last Monday.

AND FINALLY: The bonfire season is upon us. Rye is on 10th. People in other parts of the country have no idea of the fun and games, blacked up marching drummers, costumes and all the traditions here in Sussex. Keep safe. Make sure pets are safely indoors. ENJOY.
