GREETINGS: Suddenly it seems to be autumn, ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.’ The hedgerows are turning red with all the “hips and haws”. Is it a sign of a hard winter to come, or a sign that it was a pretty good summer, taken over all. The fruit available at the moment is certainly very luscious. I DO love Victoria plums. But with the nights drawing in so fast, it behoves us to make the most of the daylight while we can. When the sun does manage to get through the grey clouds, it is still quite warm, enough to sit about in if you have the time.

CHURCH NEWS: There will be a service of Morning Prayer at 10.30 am this coming Sunday, the 16th after Trinity. This Sunday is the one especially designated as Battle of Britain Sunday, although the actual date was the previous Tuesday. This year is the 75th anniversary. There are people in this area who remember watching the fights over the Channel. On Monday we commemorate St. Matthew the Apostle, also the day is designated as an International Day of Prayer for Peace.

HARVEST SUPPER: The Harvest Supper will be held on Friday 2nd October at 7 for 7.30 pm. Tickets cost £5 per person. Please will you book early so that catering can be organised. Contact Christine Wheeler or Janet Pegg to book your tickets.

WEATHER: That jet stream is looping south again, allowing the low pressure systems to gallop in across the Atlantic. One of them is the remnant of a tropical storm, so the winds are a bit energetic too. Wednesday next week - 23rd September - is the Autumnal Equinox. There is a folk song which refers to Equinoctial Gales. All is following the pattern again,.

SEPTEMBER SCARECROWS: Lots are appearing round the village now. Voting papers are available, but you probably won’t want to vote yet,because the competition is open until the 27th September at 12.30 pm. Dexter is hoping to have photographs of every one in the Stores, for people who cannot walk all around the village. Voting forms cost £1 with all proceeds being donated to the New Pavilion Fund. You have TOMORROW to make your final choice. Go for it.

QUIZ: There will be a Quiz Night on 19th September with all proceeds going to the Trust. Bring your own drinks and cutlery.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: The Autumn Flower Show is on Saturday 26th September.There is a section in the Cookery Class for the best Seasonal Dessert. This is kindly sponsored by Kate and Syd Mylrea from Manor Farm Oast. There is also a class for any funny vegetable. Another class is for a photograph taken by you, to be judged by the public. This show includes the Childrens’ Section for which medals will be awarded. These are kindly sponsored by Sue from the Robin Hood Inn. Entries have to be received by 7 pm on Wednesday 23rd September. Staging is between 8 and 10 am on the morning of the Show, which will open to the public from 2 pm.

QUEEN’S HEAD: The live music for this coming Sunday will be played by Smokestack, playing Blues n Jazz. This same day will see Ian and some like - minded peddlers cycling 106.6 km - 66 miles starting at the Queen’s Head, Icklesham, travelling along lanes, roads and tracks of the 1066 countryside.This mammoth effort is to show that they haven’t completely lost it yet, but chiefly to raise funds for St. Michael’s Hospice.
