CHURCH SERVICE: The 10.30 am service on Sunday will be Parish Eucharist for the 15th Sunday after Trinity. Monday 14th September is known as Holy Cross Day or Holy Rood Day. I learn that Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine supervised excavations in Jerusalem which uncovered the ‘True Cross’ After her death, Constantine built a basilica on the site, which was dedicated in 335. Thursday 17th is dedicated to Hildegard, Abbess of Bingen.

WEATHER: That pesky jet stream is at it again. Last week it had looped south of the British Isles, bringing the low pressure and yet more rain. But this week it has pottered off north again, which is why we have high pressure and sunshine, temperatures back up to high teens again. Unfortunately it will not be staying there for very long. We’ve known about the Gulf Stream for a long time. When did the Jet Stream come to our attention?

SCARECROWS: There are some very imaginative statures beginning to appear around the village. Keep them coming, they do brighten up the scenery.

NEW PAVILION FUND RAISER: The BLAKEY’S returned to Icklesham and put on a very professional evening in aid of The New Pavilion Project. It was a pity that we didn’t sell as many tickets as anticipated at the outset of our planning, but to be fair we didn’t realise that we would have to compete with the first night of Strictly Come Dancing. However, those who did attend enjoyed the evening and through their generosity a profit of £265 was raised. Thanks to everyone who supported the evening and especially those who helped with the clearing up at the end of the evening. It was all very much appreciated.

QUIZ: The next date is 19th September. So far 5 teams have booked. There is still time and room for more. The profit of this one goes to the Trust.

QUEEN’S HEAD: The live music on Sunday 13th September will be played by the Dave Paull Trio, playing covers from 4 - 6 pm. There will be a quiz night in aid of St. Michael’s Hospice on Wednesday 16th starting at 8.30 pm. We are asked “What’s the SI unit of luminous intensity?” Next week, on 20th of September, Ian and some like minded peddlers will cycle 106.6 km - yes 66 miles - from the Queen’s Head, Icklesham along many of the roads, lanes and tracks of the 1066 countryside. They might even encounter a pub on the way. This mammoth effort is not just to show that they haven’t completely lost it yet, but also to raise much needed funds for St. Michael’s Hospice. QUEEN ELIZABETH: I would like to add my tribute to our longest serving Monarch EVER in the history of these islands. On 9th September, our Queen Elizabeth became the longest serving of any monarch, fulfilling her promise to serve all her life. Whether you are a royalist or not, surely she deserves our congratulations and thanks. And the following day is Prince Harry’s 31st birthday.
