Icklesham

GREETINGS: Well, there we are then. August is over for this year and Autumn must be just around the corner. It is rather strange that momentum seems to be regenerating now that September is with us. Or maybe that is just because I was conditioned by the school terms. The “back-to-work” still exerts its influence even now.

CHURCH SERVICE: The 10.30 am service will be Family Communion with a Baptism, on Sunday 6th September, for the 14th Sunday after Trinity. During the coming week we celebrate the birth of the Virgin Mary. September is set aside as the Creation Season during which prayers are said for the works of nature. This is a possible reason for many Harvest Festivals to happen around now. Icklesham’s Harvest Thanksgiving will be on 27th September at 10.30 am. Tomorrow, Saturday, is the Ride and Stride annual fund raising event for the Historic Churches Trust. Many churches will be open for visitors who need to collect signatures to prove that they have visited that particular church on their tour. On Monday 7th September there will be a celebration of Holy Communion at 5 Villages House.

PROMENADE CONCERTS: If you are a music lover, you may feel sad that the season of Prom Concerts comes to an end tomorrow, Saturday. This is another indication that summer is over !!

ICKLESHAM SCARECROW COMPETITION: Competition entries are beginning to appear around the village. I have seen an angel and a devil so far. There are sure to be lots more because it only opened officially last Sunday. Forms are available at the Village Store. also Judging papers. I shall wait a bit for more to appear before I go to make my choice.

WEATHER: Now that we are in September, does that mean we might see an improvement in the weather, and have an Indian Summer? That could be good. August wasn’t very good for holiday makers in England was it ? In Devon, my family reported that out of 12 days, it had rained on 8 of them. Difficult to find things to do when you are away from home. At least the rain was warm most of the time, but the lightning over the sea was spectacular last weekend.

SCHOOL: The children are now back at school in their new classes, ready for the long haul up to Christmas.

CATALOGUES: I am already receiving Christmas catalogues from various charities, for cards and gifts. It does seem a tad early! If I buy now to “get ahead” shall I have forgotten where I put the cards when I want them?

QUEEN’S HEAD: The live music on Sunday 6th September will be played by the Roger Carey 3, the music being Jazz Rock. Ian writes, “ On Sunday 20th September myself and a collection of like-minded peddlers will cycle 106.6.km (yes 66 miles) from the Queen’s Head Icklesham along many of the roads, lanes and tracks of the 1066 countryside. We might even encounter a pub along the way. We will be doing this not just to show that we haven’t completely lost it yet, but also to raise much needed money for St. Michael’s Hospice. We hope that you feel able to support our pedalling for this very deserving cause by popping spare change into collecting pots at the Queen’s Head, Icklesham or the Royal Oak, Pett.Or you can visit www.justgiving.com/IAN-MITCHELL1066 to donate on line.” Ian also sent a super picture of himself when very young cycling along in traffic. It’s never too young to start training, he says. !!

NEW PAVILION FUND RAISER: On Saturday 5th September the BLAKEY’S return to Icklesham. Those who went to Stuart’s birthday party will remember the excellent night they put on. Please spread the word that tickets are £5 each, available from Stuart. It is “bring your own drink.” There will be a raffle, therefore any donations of prizes would be appreciated. There has been a Trust Committee Proposal that we do away with the Fete next year and all fund raising of 2016 will go towards the New Pavilion. Please let Stuart know if you agree with this so that he can pass on your thoughts and opinions as a Village representative.

TABLE SALE: There will be a Table Sale on Saturday 5th September in the Memorial hall, doors open at 10 am until 1 pm. There are still tables to let at £5 each. Please ring 814 401 to book. It is like an indoor boot sale, so there should be some bargains to be found. Plenty of free parking, and all are welcome. If the weather is nice there may be some cricket on the recreation ground in the afternoon too. Rye 3rds have a fixture with Heathfield Park. This is scheduled to start at 1.30 pm.

KEN SWIFT: Ken has passed away in a Nursing Home in Hastings. He was 84 and had been ill for some time. Ken and his late wife Maggie came to Icklesham and lived in Oast House Road in a bungalow which had been his parents’. He was originally from Liverpool, but his working life had been in London where his main career had been in the Outside Broadcasting Department of the B. B. C. When he retired to Sussex, he worked with Planning in Hastings Old Town. Ken was a Parish Councillor for several years. He had been elected - not co-opted - to represent Icklesham Ward. The election was mentioned in the Daily Telegraph as Swift - that is Ken - had an opponent called Slow - the late Leslie Slow. Ken was an extremely conscientious councillor, paying great attention to detail. Ken and Maggie had no children or immediate family. Maggie had lost all her family in the Blitz.
