Icklesham

GREETINGS: I do hope that you are managing through the road works. All should be completed by next week. Unfortunately the gas works are still on-going. The important note this week is about clocks; British Summer Time begins this week end, so the clocks go FORWARD one hour on Saturday evening.

CHURCH SERVICES: The 10.30 am service on Sunday - 29th March - will be Parish Eucharist and the Reading of Our Lord’s Passion, because it is Palm Sunday. In the evening at 6.30 pm, at St. Thomas Church Winchelsea, the combined choirs of the two churches will have a service of readings, meditations and anthems entitled the Cross of Christ. The services for Holy Week are as follows : on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday there will be an Address and Compline at 6 pm; on Maundy Thursday there will be Eucharist and Feet Washing at 6 pm; on Good Friday there will be a Devotional Service Before the Cross at 2 pm; on Holy Saturday there will be the Service of Light and Blessing of the Easter Garden at 6 pm; and on Easter Sunday there will be the wonderfully joyful Easter Eucharist at 10.30 am.

EASTER LILIES: Thank you all those who have donated Easter Lilies. The church will be decorated on Saturday 4th April. If you have not given a lily but would like to put flowers in the Church, please come along on the Saturday morning after 9.30 am. The flowers with the list of those remembered will be displayed at the Easter Sunday Service and all the following week. The church is always open and it is well worth finding a few minutes to visit and enjoy the beauty of both the church and the flowers. The last of this year’s Lent Lunches will be on Friday, - TODAY - with the collection going to Macmillan Nurses. The cooks have produced lovely soup each week, and bread and cheeses. And there is always a friend to chat to. It takes place in the Memorial Hall from 12.30 to 2 pm.

Many thanks to all who have cooked and supported the charities.

WEATHER: The jet stream has wandered off again and now we are beset by Atlantic lows, so wind and rain again. I am told by horticultural experts that ‘things ‘ are two weeks behind in their growth because the growing season is cold. What a pity we had cloud all morning last Friday, but the television coverage of the Eclipse was excellent. There was also a super moon, when the moon is as close to the earth as it gets, but we couldn’t see that either.

BUTTERFLIES: As well as the small tortoiseshell butterflies, there were a couple of the bigger sulphur yellows in my garden. And it was warm enough to wake the tortoises from their winter hibernation.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: The Spring Show is on Saturday 11th April. To enter, put your name and address on a piece of paper and write the class numbers you wish to enter, and deliver it to 22, High Fords, Icklesham by 7 pm on Wednesday 8th April. The schedules for this and the other two shows are available from the above address or Judy at the Post Office in the Co-op at Winchelsea Beach. Staging is between 8 and 10 am on the morning of the show. It will be open to the public from 2 pm. As well as flower classes, there is a cup for the best home made compost. This class is kindly sponsored by Kate and Syd Mylrea of Manor Oast. There are also cookery and arts and crafts sections.

QUEEN’S HEAD: The music this coming Sunday will be played by Louis Turpin and Roger Hubbard. Ian is satisfied with his Marathon although he says it was not his personal best. He had enough energy to sprint over the finishing line !! He hopes to have raised over £1,000 for St. Michael’s Hospice. All we can say, in admiration, is “Well done, Ian.”

ROYAL OAK, PETT: Quiz Night on Wednesday 1st April at 8.30 pm. Live music on Easter Monday 5 - 7 pm with Logan Wilson and Simon Shaw

THE ROBIN HOOD INN: There will be a Vintage Easter Afternoon Tea at 6 pm on Sunday 12th April. The entertainer will be Mr. Steve Sinatra, back by demand. The menu will include sandwiches, scones, cake and a glass of Prosecco on arrival. The cost will be £14.95 per person.

PARISH COUNCIL: This is from Stuart. Hello New Pavilion supporters. Just a reminder that we have an opportunity to meet our Parish Councillors on Monday 30th March at 7 pm in our Memorial Village Hall. This will provide an update and thoughts on our proposal. It is very important that we chat with the PCs as I know there is a proposal to refurbish our existing pavilion to create a PC office and Public Toilets. In 2009, the Trust spent £5,000 + on refurbishing the old building and has spent at least another £1,000 since. How much more money is to be thrown at this old village asset? There is a lot of support for the New Pavilion from many of the ‘outside’ Parish Councillors. We need to make our feelings known to them and also that our intention is to develop youth work and encourage opportunities for the disabled. The PC can only act on what they hear. Therefore don’t let a minority vote win. We have been excellent at raising funds, now we need no money, just your VILLAGE VOICE. Please spread the word and make every effort to attend. Well done to all of those who have continued to raise funds for the project during this uncertain period.
