Icklesham

Laurie Bowman, Magpies, Oast House Field

Mrs Nora Griffen passed away peacefully in St Michael’s Hospice on 4 March 2013. She was 91 and had lived in the Five Villages House Icklesham for 17 years where she was a popular, active and much loved lady. Everyone will miss her especially her children Barry, Joan and Jim, daughters in law Linda and Gill, son in law Tony, her 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Nora Betts was born in Hastings where her family had several links with the fishing community.

In the war she enlisted as a WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force)and by the time she was demobbed Nora was a Sergeant. In 1941 she and Jim who was in the R.A.F married in All Saints Church Ore. BY 1949 the family moved to Lower Cross Cottages in Udimore where the children attended Udimore Primary School and Nora loved hopping, working in Udimore and Beckley. When she was 90 Nora’s wish was to be back in a hop garden. Robert Wheeler took her across the valley from Icklesham and she was able to experience the atmosphere of a hop garden again. In the 60s the Griffens returned to Ore. Nora was always busy and helped the Hospice in many ways. She was just as busy in the Five Villages.
