25 years ago a team of Rochdale roofers were busy here; an icklesham family wondered if their new little baby daughter should be called ‘’Gail’’ or ‘’Gale’’ and the boar who had escaped when the fences at a Tenterden game farm were blown down were not going to be recaptured. Yes it was the great storm which Michael Fish correctly said was not a hurricane and Icklesham was hit badly. Have you any interesting memories of that devastating event which you could tell the Village Voice? Please let me know’

50 or more years ago were you involved with Icklesham Vikings? The Vikings were the village Cycle Speedway club with a track on what was then open ground behind the Police House. The sport thrived after the war. there were lots of open spaces like bomb sites and derelict land. Speedway itself was hugely popular There were over 200 clubs in East London and here in East Sussex there were at least 60. The Vikings had derby fixtures with Guestling Ghosts and Rye Aces. The sport declined with many tracks being built and all the young men being conscripted as National Servicemen at 18’. Now Dave Hunting is researching the sport, and www.cyclespeedwayhistory.org.uk tells you what is already known but he needs to know more. Have you any local information? Contact him 07850 028224 or [email protected]. And please if you have any Icklesham memories of this sport let me know and they can be shared. There are still about 50 clubs in Britain. The nearest that I know of is Hellingly Lions whose track is or was by the A22.

An error in last week’s column. Remembrance Day service is on Sunday 11 November in All Saints Parish Church.. The service starts at 10.30 not 11 as wrongly stated.

Take care if you are walking on the 1066 path between Winchelsea and Icklesham. Be especially cautious if you have a dog. Two of the fields have a bull. Read the warning notices carefully.

A Hooded Crow sounds sinister. Two have been seen here. They are the same size as a Carrion Crow with black head and wings but much of the body is an ashy grey. They are common in Scotland and Ireland and are getting more common in Northern England. A few are now coming south in the winter. Don’t confuse them with the much smaller Jackdaw which just a pale grey neck and nape.
