Addressing his congregation he thanked them for the happy 8 years he has had here. Father Howard sensed the warmth of the Parish when arriving unannounced before he took the living, he chatted to Marion Ferryman who was in the Church at the time. Father Howard will soon retire to Charterhouse in Finsbury. Canon Hugh Moseley said how easily the two clergy had found working together and Canon Cocks was presented with theatre vouchers - a very suitable gift for a theatre lover who will soon be living near the West End.

Last Saturday’s Church market raised an excellent £370.56. The next market will be on Saturday 18 August.

Sunday 29 July the service will be Morning Prayer at 10.30.

Sunday 29 July 4 -6 in the Queen’s Head the live music is the Delta Ladies singing covers.

Saturday 4 August is Icklesham’s Annual Fete and Flower Show starting at 1pm. Preparations are well underway. The popular roving theatre group ‘’Applause’’ will be performing ‘’ The Last Apothecary’’. They guarantee to rid Icklesham of all its quirky ailments. The Wealden Brass Band is coming. There will be Rye Dance, children’s races, apple bobbing, a fun dog show, ferret racing ( back by popular demand),a BBQ,licensed bar and the Pett Level Rescue Boat.

There is a lucky programmers costing £1 with a £25 winner. These are on sale in Ickenham Stores, Jade’s Hairdressing Salon, and the Farm Shop.

Raffle tickets are also on sale, with three cash prizes to be won,They are on sale at Icklesham Stores, The Robin Hood and The Queen’s Head.

The church ladies would appreciate any cakes or biscuits which could be sold on the day.

Horticultural Society members don’t forget if you are going to exhibit to get your entries to 22 High Fords by 7pm next Wednesday 1 August.

Last week’s Rye Observer was a feast for this village with over 3 pages of colour. The photographs of the Art Exhibition were so clear that the individual quality of many works was apparent. The School Fayre had a full page,made over £1000, and elsewhere Icklesham children were parading with their Olympic torches. Another beautiful page had the gardens of David and Maura Wheeler of Brook Farm and David and Helen Slater of Upper Brookl Farm which were open for St Michael’s Hospice on Tuesday 17. Many walkers on the 1066 footpath have enjoyed the Brede Valley views and must have admired the superb photograph which had all the style of a Constable landscape painting. If you missed last week’s ‘’Observer’’ try to borrow or buy one.

A big change which surprised ne in Broad Street,Broad Street House’ at one time the home of many members of the Merricks family has been razed to the ground with a new house being built on the site. The mostly Victorian building had to many problems;ems to warrant restoration.

The new skate boarding half pipe is proving very popular. It is only on loan and Icklesham Parish Council need to know your views. So young people and/or their parents let the clerk Steve Foreman at [email protected] or our Parish councillor Nick Warren [email protected] know what you think.

It can be a nuisance going into Rye or Hastings for one item which you are desperate for. Try local first. Icklesham Stores have now lots of household and pet goods with the range based on what customers have asked for.

19 July 1952 in a Nissan hut which was The Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Dockhead, London, Reg Flint a tally clerk in London Docks married Monica, a nurse at St. Olave’s Hospital. The original Church was destroyed by a German V2. Reg had served in the Royal Navy aboard a H.M.S.L. (Ship Landing Tanks) taking a Sikh Tank Squadron) to invade Japan. Soon after they married Reg joined the police and when he retired he was a Chief Inspector at Luton in Bedfordshire and Monica was the Chief Nursing Officer at Luton and Dunstable Hospital.They retired to Icklesham in 1984. Monica was the matron at Leesom , the boys’ boarding house for Thomas Peacocke School while Reg fulfilled a dream and studied for a B.A. Honours in Fine Arts in Canterbury. Reg was active in the Players and they both worshipped at St Anthony of Padua, Rye.

22 July 2012 on a beautiful sunny day with many family members, friends and neighbours Reg and Monica celebrated . Talking,singing and enjoying many examples of Reg’s artwork which were displayed about the garden the atmosphere was so happy.. Among the many cards was a Blessing from Pope Benedict. Congratulations Mr and Mrs Flint.

The Icklesham Players held their AGM last Friday and although it was a disappointing turnout due to the rain, it was an enjoyable evening. They started with the first two acts of a Murder Mystery Play, which was very amusing, then while consuming cheese and wine, the audience mulled over just who the murderer might be. The Players then had the AGM with the Chairman and Treasurer giving their reports.These will soon be available on the website; www.ickleshamplayers.co.uk Then came a very special part of the evening.The Players have decided that their memorial to Joan Baker should be a silver cup called the Joan Baker Memorial Trophy and to be awarded each year to a member of the Players who has performed in an exemplary way, whether it be acting,directing or backstage. This first year they awarded the Trophy to Joan’s daughter Linda and granddaughter Amy for all their hard work painting scenery for the pantomime. Derrick Baker and daughter were there to receive the Trophy on behalf of Linda and Amy and it was quite an emotional moment. As the business came to an end the Murder Mystery concluded and only one person correctly guessed the murderer.

The Players next production is a musical one in October called ‘’Icklesham Showstoppers’’ If you have ever thought about performing you can go to the Memorial Hall at 3pm this Sunday 29 July and there will be a familiarisation session rather than auditions.

In the Rye Arts Festival 15 -30 September Ann Rachlin will be presenting ‘’Edy was a Lady’’ in the Methodist Church at 3pm Monday 24.Edy was Ellen Terry’s daughter and Ann has worked extensively on her memoirs. This will appeal to everyone interested in the theatre.`
