Icklesham village voice - March 30

Cyril Rich was born 84 years ago in Icklesham and when he died he had been a resident in the Five Villages for many years. He moved there after he lost his wife Violet, We express our deepest sympathy to his daughter Carol Moore to John and Cyril’s grandchildren Christopher, Robert and Emma. Cyril worked for many years on the Chrisford family farms. He played cricket and made nearly 400 appearances for the Icklesham Casuals.

Sunday is Palm Sunday and starts Holy Week.At 10.30 Parish Eucharist. There will be the distribution of Palm Crosses and members of the congregation will present the story of the week in The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

At noon Paige Lilly Anne Dodd of Laurel Lane will be baptised. She was born on 8 July 2011. Her loving parents Chris and Natalie, their family and friends will celebrate her Christening in the Memorial Hall.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday there is the short Compline Service at 6pm.

On Maundy Thursday. Eucharist 6pm.

Good Friday .Devotional Service 2-3pm

Holy Saturday. 6pm Service of Light and the Blessing of the Easter Garden.

Easter Sunday.Parish Eucharist 10.30

Today Friday is the last Lent Lunch of 2012.In the Memorial Hall 12.30 - 2.00pm with soup. rolls and cheese, a cuppa, and friends and neighbours. If you wish to make a donation Family Support Work would be grateful.

Tomorrow Saturday 31 the Easter Craft Fair is in the Memorial Hall with lots of different locally made arts and crafts. It opens at 10.00am and closes at 2.30. Morning or afternoon there will be refreshments. Parking is free on the Recreation Ground. The event is in aid of Memorial Hall and Pavilion funds. The person to contact is Sandra Stunt 01424 814401

Sunday 1 April Live Music at the Queen’s Head Alfie and the Alcopops are smothered.

Paypoint - that easy way to pay the big bills could be available in Icklesham Village Store if enough of us fill in the form to say we would use it. The forms are in the shop and this evidence really needs to be presented soon. Forms which are entirely confidential should be returned there by the end of this weekend.

Buzzards are soaring above Hog Hill at present. With so much of Icklesham’s farmland chemical free and an abundance of rabbits this big bird of prey (which the R.S.P.B. has called the ‘’Tourist’s Eagle’’ because of a common mistake) could do well here.

Saturday 7 April Icklesham Horticultural Society Spring Show in the Memorial Hall. Entries must be received no later than 7pm at 22 High Fords, Icklesham. If you haven’t entered before there is still time. Contact Ann Osborne 01424 814609 and for £1 you get membership and the 2012 schedule with details of each of the 3 shows the Society has. The Spring Show has classes for spring flowers, spring bulbs and cookery and of course home made compost.

Saturday 14 April 10.00 - 12.30 a Table Sale in Udimore New Hall which is next to the Church. Entrance is 50p and if you want to sell the 6 foot tables are £10 . All profits are for the hall itself. The person to contact is Carol 01797 223267.

Saturday 21 April the Robin Hood Bonfire Society is hosting its annual Over 60s Party in the Memorial Hall starting at 2pm. Guests will be treated to food, drink and entertainment. Spaces are limited so if you would like to be invited phone either Sue D’Arcy 01424 814277 or Kim Holland 01424 814491.

The Ashford railway line is open. The A259 is resurfaced and the Great Crested Newt challenge has been overcome so the road is no longer closed at East Guldeford. The bridge at Doleham Halt is repaired.The only problem now is in Three Oaks with Butchers Lane still closed,

New classes in the Memorial Hall called ‘’Active Villagers’’ have been going since February. They are Monday 9-10am 50 plus, 8-8.45 pm yoga, Tuesday 12.15 - 1.00pm yoga, Wednesday 9.10 -9.55 zumba, Thursday 6.15-7.00pm zumba, Friday 9.10-9.55am body blitz.

In last Sunday’s Hastings Half Marathon Ian Mitchell of the Queen’s Head completed the course in 2 hours 40 minutes. He was raising money for the British Legion. Jade Butcher of the Hair Studio was raising money for the Hospice. Her time was 2 hours 33 minutes. Jade and Ian thank everybody who has given them support and of course more donations for the causes are still gratefully received Mr and Mrs Croft were just running for the challenge. Eddie did it in 1hour 55 minutes and Therese did it in 2 hours 12 minutes.

Wednesday 18 July more runners in Rother. The iconic Olympic Torch will be carried through St. Leonards and Hastings as far as Martineau Lane, Ore. Through Guestling, Icklesham and Winchelsea the Torch will be taken by a vehicle convoy. Runners will take over again in Rye.
