Iconic city cab may help give Arun tourism boost

A LITTLE slice of Arun is zooming around London during this year’s Olympic Games which, if all goes well, might bring a welcome boost to tourism in the area.

Some of London’s iconic black cabs are sporting the Sussex by the Sea tourism badge this month in a bid to target the influx of visitors to the nation’s capital, this summer.

Arun’s cabinet member for environmental services councillor Paul Dendle, who is responsible for tourism activity, has welcomed the initiative and travelled in a Sussex by the Sea taxi at the end of last month, to see just how passengers can quickly access tourist information about the Arun district by scanning QR codes on the back of cars tip-up passenger seats.

The codes direct smartphone users to different sections of the council’s tourism website so they can find out more about the area’s award-winning beaches, stunning rolling countryside, history and heritage and unique landmarks and events.

Paul said: “It’s an important year for tourism across the UK, because there are so many extra people in London for the 2012 games.

“By making it as easy as possible for potential visitors to plan their trips to Sussex by the Sea, I hope that we’ll stand out from the crowd and encourage even more people holiday here.”

Since Arun downsized its Sussex by the Sea visitor’s guide from an glossy A4 to a slimmer, pocket-size brochure, more than 50,000 copies have been printed and distributed in the area, three-quarters of which have already been snapped up by potential visitors.
