HOME FROM HOME: I suppose I've never really got over '˜playing house'. The mud-pie period in my childhood still lurks, so I really enjoy a few days away in a cottage or cabin, where I can cook up meals in unfamiliar bake ware, and look through cupboards, amazed to see that they have provided a corkscrew and a rolling pin. [I know, it's pathetic, but there you go] I had quite a surfeit of travel at a young age. I travelled back and forth to Canada and England many times on liners that seemed so huge to a small child. Spending six days each trip , watching those liners churn up the ocean in such a mesmerising way was a daily reminder of the vastness of the sea. I could have watched it forever. I've travelled sporadically, but now I can't be bothered with airports, unless it's to meet someone special at '˜Arrivals'. Last week we went to a log cabin with a three pound bag of flour and half the larder in tow, and chopping ginger and spring onions on a borrowed chopping board seemed almost '˜jolly' compared to chopping veg at home. There was something of the '˜Goldilocks And The Three Bears' about picking out a strange armchair, in which to sit and read our books too. It was peaceful and relaxing looking out over different fields, and suitably frenetic exploring the nearest shopping centre. The only jet- set we aspire to now is a gas -jet, on a stove, in a quaint cottage somewhere in England's green and pleasant land!

A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion, in Iden Parish Church, at 9.30am this Sunday .Many thanks to the ladies who prepared the Mothering Sunday bouquets last week.

REMEMBERING PAT: Last Saturday afternoon there was a tea in Iden village hall, in memory of Pat Buckland. Pat’s friends and family met to remember her. She was such a part of Iden, always with a lovely smile, and always ready to help others. Our thoughts are with Pat’s family, Mandy and Paul at this time. Mandy asked me to thank all those who did so much to help her with the tea. Pat would have liked nothing better than a tea party in the village hall for people that she loved. Not so long ago Mandy arranged a party in the village hall for Pat’s 80th birthday, a party that went with a swing, because Mandy and Paul hired the ‘Lindy Hoppers’, and the village joined in the dancing. It was fun, and comical to see villagers trying to ‘Lindy Hop.’ Pat was in her element, happy, and obviously loving the whole thing. Her face was a study of pure joy, and that’s how she deserves to be remembered.

A LITTLE OF WHAT YOU FANCY!: There is something about the way catkins and Pussy Willow, both dusted with pollen, both so nice in with spring flowers around Easter time, that warms the heart, and marks an end to winter. I like the way spring creeps up on us don’t you? As if overnight, everything turns green, and there is cause for celebrating new shoots, new lambs, and all that bridal- looking blossom. I felt devil-may -care while driving through the countryside last week, so that night I had a cream egg in bed, while I read my book. Not an advisable thing to do, I got chocolate on the sheets, but it was great. I had more willpower when I was young than I do now. We spend most of our lives toeing the line, doing what’s expected of us, so it’s quite liberating stepping into a rebellious old age!
