WAITING FOR THE DAFFODILS: This week, like many Iden folk, I had the the flu [not a pretty sight] The Christmas decorations have been replaced by little tableaus of tissues, Paracetamol and vapour rub here and there [I don’t do flu neatly] I’ve watched some rubbish TV [the prerogative of the invalid.] However one programme enchanted me. ‘The Great British Garden Revival’, on BBC2, featured daffodils, in their many shades and varieties. Daffodils are such hopeful flowers aren’t they? I felt cheered, seeing that sea of yellow, and looked forward to seeing them soon in reality. When a season has reached it’s sell – by -date-, we are as fickle as a heroine in a Jane Austin novel, and long for whatever the next season has to offer. [not to worry though, because we will welcome it back again like the Prodigal Son, when it happens along again] At this precise moment though, I’m waiting to see the daffodils, around the Iden finger posts , and the snowdrops in the churchyard, in the interim. Iden is such a perfect back drop for all flowers. You know those periodic puzzlers, ‘which six people, alive or dead, would you have to your dinner party’, well I would have William Wordsworth as one of mine, because he is so synonymous with daffodils. A quiet thinker in a frock coat [I’m not sure how he would get on with Kevin Costner and Freddie Mercury , but a big pan of roast potatoes is a great leveller!]

TOMORROW IS THE JUMBLE SALE: There will be a jumble sale in Iden village hall tomorrow 17th January at 1pm., in aid of Iden Bowls Club. No electrical goods, but jumble can be brought to the hall from 10am.Our first jumble sale in 2015.Should be a good one!

THE POP-IN: The next Pop-In will be on Monday 19th January at 11 am in the village hall All are welcome.

BINGO: Bingo will be on Thursday 22nd January, at 2pm in the village hall .Eyes down at 2.30pm. There is a chance to win the jackpot, and tea is served at half time. It,s a homely, fun afternoon .Anyone from Iden and surrounding villages is welcome

SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion in Iden Parish Church, at .9.30 am on Sunday 18th January.

A PARTY FOR THE GARDEN SOCIETY: There will be a party for members of the Iden and Playden Garden Society on Saturday 17th January, in Iden village hall. New members of the society are always welcome. Their seasonal shows are always spectacular. Fees per annum are £5.

MURDER MYSTERY EVENING: Tickets are on sale in Iden Stores for a ‘Murder Mystery evening ‘, in the village hall on Friday January 30th. Doors open at 6.30 for 7pm . Tickets at £10 include a fish and chip supper, so bring whatever sauces and condiments you need .Bring a knife and fork too. Drinks are on sale by donation ‘.Broadchurch’ will have nothing on Iden that night. I’m telling you! Proceeds go to the Church and village hall.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: There was a meeting of the Parish Council on Tuesday 6th January in the village hall .Michael Miller chaired the meeting, and began by thanking all those concerned with the Iden Christmas meal. Michael said that the carol service, made £350, for the Air Ambulance. It appears that the average length of stay for the managers of the Village shop is four years, and Geoff and Elizabeth are shortly to leave us. A possible replacement has been found. Michael expressed his sadness at the death of Brenda Campbell before Christmas and Doros Pamboris, during the Christmas period, wishing condolences to their families. Possible changes to the village bus service, have not yet been decided upon. The Parish Council require a £1000 increment this year, in order to keep abreast of necessary repairs, village safety measures etc. There has not been a change in budget precept for 4 years. It was suggested that a smaller yearly increment might be better, preventing a large increase. The village Plan is to be brought forward A date is yet to be set for villagers and the council to meet and discuss it’s content. Grass cutting fees are to rise. There will be an increase in fees, for playing field usage. Minutes of the meeting can be seen on the village notice board, and on the village web site[idenvillage.wordpress.com]

WE WILL MISS GEOFF AND ELIZABETH: Geoff and Elizabeth are leaving Iden Village Stores, and they will be sorely missed. The shop has been run beautifully, and the atmosphere has always appeared calm and happy. They both served us with a smile, and everything seemed so ship- shape and Bristol fashion. I am sure that everyone wishes them God speed, and a very big thanks for making Iden Stores, not just a shop, but a pleasant experience for so many.

IDEN REMEMBERS DOROS: On Friday, 9th January, the funeral took place, Doros Pamboris in Iden Parish church. The church was packed, because Doras, a long-time Iden resident was from Cyprus, and his happy, gregarious personality brought to Iden, the sunshine of his homeland .Alexis, one of Doros’s three children gave a moving eulogy. Our thoughts are with Liz, Alexis, Joseph and Xanthe at this time.
