I love oil seed rape, however I do sympathise with anyone who is plagued by hay fever, because I know it can aggravate that, but it is a joy to see that haze of yellow. Everything in nature is beautiful when it is ‘en masse’ isn’t it, carpets of bluebells, fields of corn and avenues of blossom. A feast for the eyes. Anyway, wherever we walk or drive around here at any time of the year, there are fields and flowers to delight us, even if covered in snow. My Mother has a lot to answer for, because she always maintained that flowers have feelings. Even now I can’t pick flowers and leave just one flower from a clump on it’s own, in case it gets lonely [daft, but there it is--- thanks mum] But just imagine a lone bluebell, used to being in a clump, wavering in the breeze without it’s mates .It’s something to think about isn’t it? Also, I can’t throw flowers out until they are well and truly dead. Next thing you know there will be flowers in my garden that have a label saying “DO NOT RESUSCITATE”.

NOW! For something serious. This week, someone near and very dear to me was the victim of a scam, and it was devastating for the whole family. I don’t want it to happen to any of you, but it COULD unfortunately, and if it does it is heartbreaking, and can be life changing. Off times the money involved is irrecoverable, depending on the circumstances of the scam.. Many people feel too ashamed to admit that they have been caught out by a scam, but people who scam others out of their money are very plausible, and can be well spoken and sound very caring, posing as bank and building society officials on the telephone, and even posing as the Police, or as the fraud squad. . Many an intelligent, decision-making person has been the victim of a scam. Coincidentally, this month, Rother District Council are having a ‘Scams Awareness Month’. to try to fight back against scammers. This is not to alarm us, but to make everyone more vigilant .If you are contacted out of the blue about your account, be suspicious. NEVER give your pin number to anyone over the phone no matter who they say they are, and if you are asked to ring a number on the back of your card, or give any account information over the phone, be suspicious and use ANOTHER phone if you decide to make enquiries. Scammers may not hang up their end, and may use a bogus ring tone, so if you ring back on the same phone you may be giving your account details straight to them, and don’t forget they can sound very plausible and helpful. Many try at weekends or evenings when the banks are shut, to put people in panic mode. Banks and Police NEVER collect a bank card by motorbike or any other means, so NEVER hand over your card to anyone .Banks and Police NEVER ask for your pin number over the phone. Bank details are only for you, so you don’t need to share them over the phone at all. If you are worried, go to the bank or building society in person, or if you have an on line account check your accounts yourself . DON’T PANIC, think logically. These scams take various forms, and are becoming rife. Share your experiences if you have been the victim of a scam, so that more people become aware of the trickery involved. If a computer company make an unsolicited phone call out of the blue offering to fix your computer put the phone down [.GUARD YOUR DOSH, is the order of the day.

Okay! Now on a more cheerful note, where are we going and what are we doing in Iden? There will be a service of Holy Communion in Iden Parish Church on Sunday 4th May at 9.30am.

Don’t forget there is a quiz night in the village hall on Saturday 17th May at 7.30pm, in aid of Iden’s defibrillator. £7.50, for tickets, which includes a fish and chip supper. .Tickets available in Iden Village Stores, or telephone Richard [01797 280462] It will be great fun. Bring your own drinks and cutlery. [I’m bringing vinegar, sliced lemon, tomato sauce, salt and pepper and baby wipes, we’re having the lot on our table!] We may not get any questions right, but we’ll have every condiment known to man.!

On Wednesday 14th May, at 6pm for 6.30pm there will be a talk in the Rye Community Primary School, arranged by The Ferry Rd. Health Centre P.P.G [Patient Participation Group] and Rye Medical Centre P.P.G., entitled ‘Robots, Lasers, Iceballs, The Changing Face Of Urological Surgery’, by Mr. Roger Plail, Consultant Urologist, East Sussex Healthcare Trust .There will be refreshments provided, and car parking in Grove Lane. It sounds very interesting indeed. All are welcome .We are all so lucky to be alive at a time when developing surgical techniques, have revolutionised healthcare., and continue to do so.

May 15th is Bingo in the village hall. Doors open at 2pm, eyes down at 2.30 There is a raffle, and a light tea will be served. It’s great fun, and a nice way to while away an afternoon Everyone from Iden and surrounding villages is welcome. The more the merrier.

Well I’m going to close now and do a spot of embroidery. There is something wonderfully peaceful and old fashioned about concentrating thought on just a needle and an array of threads .It’s very Jane Eyre sitting at the feet of Mr. Rochester [though maybe lets not go overboard eh?]
