A very sincere apology to John and Sue White as last week we reported that they had cycled up Mount Toubkal in Morocco. I am afraid my correspondent did not realise that as fit as they both are, to cycle up a

14,000 ft mountain was asking a bit much, even for Sir Bradley Wiggins. This is the highest mountain in the Atlas range!

What we meant to say of course was that they trekked up the mountain in aid of the BACE Charity which supports educational projects in Gambia and for which to date they have received over £1000 in sponsorship. Sue and John would again like to thank everyone who supported them. As a penance, my informant will now double his sponsorship.

Idem Parish Council met on Tuesday 3 September after its summer recess. Apologies were received from Mrs. Paula Riley. There were about a dozen members of the public in attendance together with County Councillor Keith Glazier and District Councillors Nick Ramus and Paul Osborne

Under Planning, it was reported that permission had been given for the application from St Anne’s Church Lane for an extension and alterations. It was pointed out that Rother are now seeking archaeological surveys for these sorts of situations where properties are deemed to be in historically sensitive areas of the village. Apparently this will be at householders’ cost which is around £250 every day the experts are involved. The Chairman said that potential applications should now be aware of this new condition and should consult Planning to enquire whether their property will be affected as they will need to bear in mind the potential costs as part of affordability considerations

It was agreed that the bus shelter opposite the Bell will be repaired and the tender for £1220 was accepted.

The Council via Keith Glazier is to ask Highways at East Sussex whether a roadside sign could be placed opposite the playing field entrance to help visitors who do not know the area.

The Clerk gave an update on the Cycle Lane project which involves opening up the land alongside Scots Float on the Military Road. Much work has gone into this project over the summer months involving several agencies and it was disappointing that the application for funding was going to be delayed beyond the 31 August deadline. It is hoped, once the Council and Playden Parish Council have all the formalities completed, that the application involving some £24,000 of funding can be submitted. The benefits to tourism and local businesses, particularly bed and breakfast and public house establishments, are expected to be considerable as the work when completed will greatly enhance facilities for leisure activities.

The Chairman reported that there had been a very serious problem last month with dog mess in the playing field. The situation had become so bad that the Police had been asked to make regular patrols in the hope that by showing a presence, they would encourage owners to clear up after their dogs. It would appear that yet again it is non residents who are ignoring the warning signs and requests and if caught, the Council has made it very clear that prosecutions would follow. It is not surprising that residents feel very strongly that such irresponsible people are not only polluting their playing field but also giving conscientious owners a bad name

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Tuesday 1 October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall
