Iden village voice

Iden Village Hall really did look lovely last Saturday when The Iden and Playden Garden Society staged the Spring Flower and Produce Show. Despite fears that the weather would have decimated the daffodils, there were plenty of beautiful blooms to admire.

There were 124 exhibits by 14 exhibitors.

The results were as follows, and I apologise for not giving details of each flower.

Classes 1 to 6, daffodils;Class 1 Janet Johnson; classes 2 & 3 Carol Worwood; class 4 Janet Johnson; class 5 Denny Nicol; class 6 and Best in Show Carol Worwood - these were stunning yellow flowers; The Jill Brodrick Cup for the most points in classes 1 to 6 was awarded to Carol Worwood. Classes 7 to 10 were tulips - every colour from white to deep purple: classes 7 & 8 Janet Johnson; class 9 Denny Nicol. Then came the classes for polyanthus, foliage plants and so on. Classes 11 & 12 Janet Johnson; class 14 Jill Johnson; classes 16 & 18 Mrs. Trish Evans; class 19 Yvonne Metcalf; class 20 Mrs. J Robinson; class 21 Yvonne Metcalf; class 22 Mrs. A Banning; class 23 Denny Nicol.

Class 24 was won by Gwyneth Parsons; class 25 Ann Banning; 26 & 27 Carol Worwood; 28 Yvonne Metcalf; 29 Rose Dearden; there were no entries for classes 30 to 34 - vegetables, but class 35 was won by Janet Johnson. The Butterfield Cup for the most points in the Domestic section was won by Noreen Winter, and the Major Wager Cup for the most points in classes 1 to 41 was awarded to Carol Worwood.

Not too many people had stayed for the prize giving because the Grand National was to be screened. All winners are to be congratulated, it was a delightful show. And the cream and jam scones baked by Carol for the refreshments were pretty good too !!

Ten years ago, a couple of friends went out on a map-reading exercise around the woods and so enjoyed themselves that they wondered if others would like to do some walking too. And thus the Iden Field Trotters group was founded. To begin with there were 4, now it is variable but averaging about 10 members. The summer walks are in the evening and gentlemen are allowed to come, which leads to a pub to conclude the evening. There could be as many as 25 for these evening walks. They have hardly ever been cancelled in all those 10 years. There was one broken arm and one fainting, but no other casualties. For the 10th anniversary this week, the very first walk was retraced and a party was held in the Old Hall in Iden
