If negotiations fail we should leave the EU, says Littlehampton MP

THE powers Brussels and the European Union have over Britain need to be significantly reduced, Littlehampton's MP has said this week.

Nick Gibb, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton has admitted he would like to see the stranglehold Brussels has over the UK reduced and that, if this could not happen, he would support a move which could see Britain leaving the EU.

Mr Gibb said: “I believe that too many of our laws and regulations are made by Brussels. I want to see more of those powers returned to Britain. After the election, if the Conservatives are elected into Government, David Cameron will negotiate for a new relationship with the European Union which, if successful, will see a significant reduction in the money we hand over to Brussels and a reduction in the powers that Brussels and the EU have over UK law.

“I am optimistic that he will be successful in those negotiations, but if those negotiations fail to bring back significant powers to Britain then I believe Britain should leave the European Union.”

On Friday the House of Commons debated the next stage of the passage of EU Referendum Bill, which Mr Gibb voted to support.

The referendum would give people the opportunity to vote on whether Britain should or should not be a member of the EU.

The Tories have pledged to hold a referendum before the end of 2017 if elected with an overall majority.
