Improvements at special school

Northease Manor School, in Rodmell, had been rated ‘requires improvement’ in all areas except for its ‘good’ sixth-form provision following an inspection in November 2014.

But a recent monitoring visit by inspector Matthew Barnes found many changes had been made, with the senior leadership team responding “positively” to the issues raised.

Mr Barnes said: “The improvements made to leadership have started to bring about improvements in the quality of teaching.”

He particularly highlighted teaching in art and English as strong. While Mr Barnes recognised the achievements made in maths, he felt the improvements made had not been done so at a fast enough rate. While results achieved in 2015 had been higher than those of 2014, they were still much lower than the results achieved in other subjects.

The effectiveness of the school’s governing body was seen to be improving, while Mr Barnes said the progress made by leaders was “particularly well demonstrated” when it came to how much the welfare, health and safety provision had improved.
