Imy picks up top musician prize

Chichester-based pianist Imy Luc, aged 17, is this year’s winner of the Arun Young Musician award.

Imy overcame tough competition in the Gala Concert which was held, for the first time at Windlesham House School near Washington.

Her performance of a Liszt etude just pipped runner-up Andy Martin (flute) and 2005 winner, Tamzin Barnett.

Spokesman Jim Hurdwell said: “This festival, run by Littlehampton Rotary Club, turns 30 this year and continues to show the high quality of our local young musicians. It is also a tribute to some of the finest music teachers and motivators around.

“From classes held at Georgian Gardens Primary School Rustington on March 12/13, judges Lisa Smith and Steve Browning chose a splendid array of talented youngsters. Prize-winners or not, all of them regally entertained a large audience of families, friends and local dignitaries.

“We heard choirs, vocal soloists, string woodwind and brass players in a feast of music in super surroundings. From the “Ah” factor of children’s choirs to the more seasoned performers, none of whom was over 18, this concert had something for everyone.

“Oliver Brooks’s tuba not only plumbed the depths but also scaled the heights whilst Alex Carman deftly demonstrated the intricacies of his recorder. Ensembles and choirs contrasted well with soloists both instrumental and vocal.

“The proceedings were compered with customary panache and humour by George Jones and the Rotarians and piano accompanists excelled in making things run so smoothly.”
