There was bags of Christmas cheer as the traditional Wheelbarrow Walk took place through Chichester on Saturday.

There was a great turnout for what was the 119th annual walk, organised by one of the country’s oldest clubs.

The event was established to take dinner, presents and good cheer to elderly residents of the city in wheelbarrows.

Another tradition is the Mayor of Chichester, known as the Uptown Mayor, riding back in the wheelbarrow.

Unfortunately going up the kerb, the Uptown Mayor, Cllr Peter Budge, was tipped out of the wheelbarrow but without any harm and much to the amusement of the procession.

Downtown Mayor Cllr Richard Ploughman said: “We were very pleased with the excellent turnout for the 119th Christmas Walk.

“The Corporation of St Pancras, better known as the Wheelbarrow Club, was founded 326 years ago to celebrate William of Orange coming England.

“We have an annual dinner around the time of Bonfire Night and has now been established as the oldest continuous dining club in the Guinness Book of Records.

“Funds are raised for the Old Dears Charity which supports Local Alms houses in Riverside.”

The Wheelbarrow Walk began at the Nags Head pub at 11.45am on Saturday, and a procession of club members, partners, friends, Father Christmas, morris dancers and wheelbarrows full of gifts wound its way to the bungalows at Riverside.
