Independent economic commission to be established in West Sussex

An independent commission providing an assessment of the potential for economic growth in West Sussex is set to be established.

Louise Goldsmith (Con, Chichester West), leader of West Sussex County Council, has agreed to set up a West Sussex Independent Economic Commission consisting of leading business and academic experts, which will then make recommendations to the council.

It is hoped the new body will identify what barriers the county council can remove to drive economic growth in West Sussex.

A report on the decision said: “We need to build on the evidence and intelligence that informed our current Economic Strategy to strengthen our understanding of business needs and how best to support them.”

Proposals have been discussed with area economic partnerships and other local authorities within West Sussex.

Recruitment for the commission could be completed within the next few weeks, with the new body hosting debates during October, with recommendations submitted to WSCC in January 2014.
