Innovation praised at St Richard's Hospital

RESEARCH and innovation at the area's hospitals were celebrated at a special exhibition and conference held at St Richard's Hospital.

The conference was the Western Sussex Hospitals Trust’s second event and featured a display of posters in the Chichester Medical Education Centre (CMEC) detailing the results of clinical studies which have been presented at national and international medical events over the past 18 months. A similar exhibition was also held at Worthing Hospital.

The projects which staff have been involved in include a potentially life-saving treatment for victims of drug overdoses, a project to reduce the number of Caesarean sections and a keyhole surgery technique to treat hernias.

The display week was organised by clinical tutor Dr Gordon Caldwell, who is also behind an invention for a ward-round trolley to make doctors’ lives easier.

“I already knew that we carry out a lot of innovative research for a trust of our size, but seeing the posters keep on coming in really gives you the full picture of quite how much there is,” he said. “Being able to display them all together creates a great opportunity for colleagues to see what else is going on outside their own areas and take inspiration for ways in which they can develop their own services and expertise.”
