Inquest hears elderly woman took overdose

An elderly woman chose to end her own life, an inquest at Worthing magistrate’s court heard on Thursday.

Veronica Haissell died of an overdose of the painkiller Tramadol, at the age of 79 at her home at Wisely Court in West Avenue, Worthing.

Martin Milward, deputy coroner for West Sussex, conducted the hearing.

He heard how the retired clerical assistant had lost her husband in 2004 and missed him dreadfully.

Mrs Haissell was under pain management for severe osteoporosis in her spine and both of her hips.

Lyn Ralfe, coroner’s officer for Worthing and Chichester, read out a statement which said Mrs Haissell’s family did not believe the incident was a cry for help, and that she had in fact intended to harm herself.

The coroner recorded a verdict of suicide.
