Insight into big flower events

Anyone who has visited Chelsea or any of the other big flower shows can not but be amazed at the work that goes into the organisation of the project.

Members of the Felpham and Middleton Horticultural Society were fortunate to be further informed about the planning and logistics of the events by Mr Paul Patton at our meeting on Tuesday, July 24.

Paul Patton has a background in farming, but has had many other jobs in horticulture and has been a project manager to many large firms wishing to have stands or gardens at Chelsea or other large shows.

He showed us some excellent slides about the setting up of these shows, the difficulties of delivering the material needed, and how it looks like a building sight until the last moment when the royal visitors arrive.

It takes at least a year to plan these projects, two weeks to set up and then a short time to demolish.

To lease a shop for the show it costs 5000, and a large garden can cost three quarters of a million pounds.

After all this information and refreshments, we were given a short quiz with prizes for the right answers. I think all those attending had a really informative and entertaining evening.

The society's next event is the flower and produce show on August 18 at 1.30pm at St Mary's Centre in Felpham.

The next meeting will be held on September 25, at 7.30, when Mr Derek Betts will be talking about '˜From Seed to Your Garden'.
