Inspirational Haiden will takepart in Wheelchair Challenge

Haiden Debley-Turner lives with his family in Winchelsea and is a member of the Hastings and Rother Support Group of the charity Sussex Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SASBAH).

SASBAH is celebrating its 50th birthday this year, and is staging a series of events to mark the occasion.

One of them takes place on Saturday at Worthing Leisure Centre and Haiden has chosen to play his part.

Deputy Manager Claire Bryant explains: “We are holding a Wheelchair Challenge event where both disabled and able-bodied people will be given the chance to go round an athletics track in a wheelchair.

“Two of our members are actually doing half-marathons, which is a staggering 53 laps, while others will do what they feel able to achieve.

“Haiden is a remarkable boy. He is going to try out wheelchair racing and other wheelchair sports. He is a real inspiration to all of us here at SASBAH.

“Because he is aged five he is too young to take part in the one-mile challenge, but that will not stop Haiden taking part and, I am sure, enjoying every minute.

“He has had a very challenging time because he has had a huge amount of surgery and spent time in plaster literally from waist to toe.”

The Wheelchair Challenge event is taking place at Worthing Leisure Centre on Saturday 29 between 11am and 3pm.

There will also be fun attractions, including a bouncy castle, live music, performing arts and a variety of disabled sport demonstrations.

SASBAH deputy manager Claire Bryant wants to encourage members of the public to come along on the day.

Claire added: “This is a free fun day out for the family while at the same time displaying a very serious message about disability. We want to see as many people involved as possible.”
