International cause praises Arundel's '˜fair' pupils

For the past four years, youngsters from across St Philip’s Catholic Primary School, in London Road, have been doing their bit to raise awareness of the Fairtrade Foundation.

The international organisation fights for better working conditions and fairer pay for farmers and workers in the developing world.

And this month, for the first time in St Philip’s history, it was officially named as one of the foundation’s Fairtrade schools.

Elizabeth Hargreaves, deputy head teacher, said: “The pupils were over the moon when they heard. There isn’t a single child in key stage 2 that has not been part of it.”

Throughout the four-year campaign, pupils from each year-six group lead the way in deciding various schemes to promote the cause, with everything from cake sales and ‘unfair’ football matches between the reception class and the year-sixes.

Mrs Hargreaves added: “I think it’s important that the children are aware of the inequalities faced by others and that life isn’t always fair. They’re so keen to help address that.”
