Intrepid team conquers Three Peaks Challenge

The team was led by Westfield electrician Tom Barnett and also included, Steve Walter, Dean Earl, Dave and Stuart Muchmore and Claire Weddle, who are all from the Hastings and Bexhill.

The magnificent six climbed Ben Nevis in Scotland, where they found snow and ice at the summit, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales in less than 24 hours.

They started on Saturday, June 8 and finished the following day – taking 23 hours and 18 minutes to complete the feat.

They were supported by two volunteer drivers, one was Tom’s father John Barnett and the other was Robert Lyne.

The pair did not sleep for the full 24 hours that the team were out climbing.

The team minibus and a full tank of petrol were provided free, thanks to Pat Hughes, from Rye and District Community Transport.

The event was to raise money for BACE – Building and Assisting Communities with Education, a charity set up by the Barnett family from Northiam.

BACE has already set up a school in the village of Bonsa in The Gambia and its next project is to build a medical centre there.

Tom said: “It was a great challenge. I’m happy the team all pushed it hard and made it in a great time. It was a challenge and an achievement we will never forget and for such a worthy cause.

“Having travelled out to The Gambia with BACE on three separate occasions to help build a school there, I am delighted to be able to support them once again as I have seen personally how all the money helps, with 100 percent of money donated going towards the projects BACE are working on.”
