Investigation after toddler escapes from nursery

AN investigation has been launched after a two-year-old boy walked out of a Durrington nursery without staff noticing.

The toddler escaped from Little Owls Nursery in Poplar Road, by climbing over a gate Friday lunchtime.

He then wandered down to Columbia Drive '“ a busy dual carriageway '“ where he was seen by a passer-by who, with the help of directions from the boy, took him home to his mother.

Little Owls, which is part of Hawthorns First School, this week released a statement.

It read: "We deeply regret the incident and are thankful the child concerned is safe and well.

"We are urgently reviewing our routines and security arrangements. A full inquiry is being conducted into how this happened."

Head teacher, Kathy Offer, added: "We would like to thank all our parents for their continued support."

The child's 19-year-old mother has vowed not send the boy back to the nursery he attended two days a week.
