iPad use opens newworld for residents

Residents at Hastings Court Care Home have been taking part in a series of new sessions called iCan.

This is a new Lottery Funded scheme which involves reminiscence through the use of iPad tablets.

It is specifically designed for individuals living with dementia and along with learning how to use an iPad it provides an interactive experience which inspires creative thinking.

Residents enjoyed their first session of iCan last week.

First residents were taught how to scroll through and look at pictures on the iPad. They also made use of an app which changed colour as you ran your finger over the screen which proved to be very popular.

Residents used a stylus to draw pictures and were then give headphones to put on through which they listened to a soundtrack and watched a walk through the bluebell woods.

This was described by some as “hugely gratifying” and “out of this world”.

Staff at Hastings Court say residents are already looking forward to their next iCan session.

A study conducted by the University of Worcester found that the use of i-Pads could be beneficial for people with dementia.

Dr Simon Evans said: “This represents an innovative and significant step in understanding the role technology plays in improving quality of life and well-being.”

Hastings Court is a new purpose built care home which has features, such as a bar bistro, a full screen cinema room, hairdressing salon, private dining for families and friends, a library, a fully-stocked courtyard garden and health and fitness facilities.
