Isabella's India trip to help build school

A Felpham Community College student has been awarded a Virgin Atlantic Scholarship to take part in the WE charity expedition to India.

Isabella Saunders is a Year 10 student at the college, and is set to take part in the expedition in July.

WE is an organisation and charity aimed at inspiring people to work together to make change. Their mission is to work with developing communities to free children and their families from poverty and exploitation, with the vision expanded to include empowering young people to make a difference.

The WE movement is organising the three week trip to west India for 30 young adults across the country, along with WE volunteers, to help build a school in a developing area.

Isabella said: “A group of students and I attended the national WE day concert event with FCC staff, held in London last term. It really inspired me. I am a senior school prefect and a member of the school council and have been involved with our school achieving their Rights Respecting Schools Award, as well as community events such as the ‘Planting for Polio’ tea party. The speakers at the WE concert were amazing and made me want to take part in something global. I had to create a video on what I have been involved with in relation to the WE movement. There are only 30 kids around the country who have been given the scholarship so I feel really proud. I won’t meet the others on the trip until we get to the airport which is quite scary but exciting. I can’t wait to get out to India and get involved with something which will be a tremendous benefit to a local community.”

Mark Anstiss, headteacher at Felpham Community College, said: “Issy has been involved with a number of charity events at FCC and is an active member of our school leadership team. We are really proud she has been chosen for this event and look forward to hearing all about it when she returns to school in September.”
