The run of fine weather hadn’t really started by Shrove Tuesday (March 4) but the day defied the previous months’ storms and rain to dawn bright and clear for pancake day in Uckfield.

The town’s famous pancake races drew a stellar host of competitors – all in flippin’ good form after days of intense practice.

Reception class and classes from years five and six at Holy Cross Primary School and toddlers from the Spire Pre-School competed against famous pancake hands like Fr Martin Onions from
Holy Cross Church; Mike Skinner and Gary King, presenters from local radio station UckfieldFM and Cllr Ian Smith, Mayor of Uckfield, who all kept pace with the youngsters.

Holy Cross Rector Canon Martin Onions said: “It was a fabulous afternoon, with lots of laughter and delicious pancakes cooked by brilliant church members.”

After the races, pancakes went on sale at 50p each with a variety of fillings including lemon and sugar, maple syrup, Nutella and strawberry jam and ice cream.
