It's a sad farewell after 35 years for Nyewood teacher

A 35-year career in education has ended for a Bognor Regis headteacher.

Angela Saffrey left the classrooms for the last time at Nyewood Infant School at the end of term.

She said her goodbyes at a special assembly with the school's 200-plus pupils.

Her immediate plans were to explore the Kennet and Avon Canal with her husband in their new motorhome and using her new electric cycle.

But it will be in September that she will really notice the change from being at school.

"As the bell is going on the first day of the new term, we should be arriving at Calais to go round France for six weeks," she explained.

Chichester resident Mrs Saffrey (58) began teaching in 1975. One of her earliest jobs was at Downview Primary School in Felpham for three years after its opening in 1976.

She was promoted to become a headteacher in 1985 and had been in charge of schools at Graffham and Sidlesham before she arrived at Nyewood Infant, in Brent Road, four years ago.

She said: "I may have worked at different schools. But one thing which has always stayed the same is the children. At Nyewood, they are lovely children and so caring. The staff work so hard for them as well. I am so proud of all of them."

Her successor will be Jacqui Cobb, who will be moving across the town from St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Glamis Street.
