It's coming up roses at Walberton show

Walberton Horticultural Society on Saturday, June 7, held its second successful rose show of the season.

With about two hundred show entries, this was particularly encouraging to the organisers as there was no domestic section, and one class had no entries.

The rose exhibits were the dominant feature of the day and these classes attracted some very fine entries.

However, apart from the rose classes, the other cut flowers in the same section made a quite prolific display, helped probably by the damp weather of recent weeks.

In the fruit and vegetable sections there were some outstanding exhibits of strawberries and rhubarb.

In the floral art section the exhibitors again showed some examples of the high level of skill and imagination demonstrated by their entries, and as usual these were much admired by visitors.

In the afternoon the show was open to the public and in about two hours attracted about 70 visitors, many of whom stayed for tea and light refreshments.

At the end of the afternoon Mr David Donovan, society president, after giving news of other local horticultural events, presented the cups and trophies to the winners.

Mrs Joan Jackson, chairman, before closing the show, thanked all those who had helped make the show such a success and reminded those present of several society events to take place in the near future.
