It’s official - Bexhill is Blooming marvellous

Bexhill has again reigned supreme, taking the Overall Winners Award at the South and South East in Bloom Awards for the second year running.

The South and South East in Bloom (S&SEIB) 2014 Awards ceremony was held at Brighton & Hove Albion’s American Express Community Stadium Amex Centre, Brighton on September 17.

Bexhill had to fight off some stiff competition this year as S&SEIB had a record number of entries. Peter Holman Chairman S&SEIB said: “This has been a record breaking year, with S&SEIB reaching over 400 entries for the first time ever. Record numbers of schools, parks, IYN’s and main entries has made 2014 an amazing year.”

Sandy Melvin, chair of Bexhill in Bloom, Lord Brett McLean President of Bexhill In Bloom, Cllr Paul Lendon and Jeannette Austin from Little Common & Cooden Business Association, attended the glittering ceremony.

Peter Holman and Jim Buttress hosted the event with celebrity gardener Chris Collins, presenting the awards.

Sandy Melvin said it was an exciting but nerve racking time as the winners of the various categories were announced.

Bexhill’s first award of the evening was in the ‘Park’s category in which Egerton Park took second place and received a Silver award.

Next came Little Common, which was entered as a Small Village and came 2nd receiving a Silver Award. Jeannette Austin said: “I was delighted, on behalf of the Little Common & Cooden Business Association, to collect the Silver Award Certificate for the Small Village category, and to thank everyone involved who have contributed towards this achievement.”

Sandy added: “And then what we had been waiting for; the Coastal Awards, where Bexhill was again the Overall Winner in our category receiving Silver Gilt.

“We were all thrilled.”

Sandy said she was delighted and overwhelmed that Bexhill was the Overall Winner for the second year running. “It is really a prestigious occasion and I am delighted with both the Bexhill and the Little Common Awards.”

Lord Brett McLean said he was proud that Bexhill once again achieved great results in the S&SEIB awards, and praised Sandy and her team for their hard work. “Bexhill in Bloom’s achievements are only due to the continued commitment and dedication of Sandy Melvin and her team of volunteers who do so much to ensure that Bexhill and Little Common are environmentally attractive area’s to visit, live and work in.”

Cllr Paul Lendon added: “It was a really beautiful sunny day, indicative of the Bexhill motto ‘Sun and Health’.

“It was a really proud moment when the Award we had won was announced.”
