Ivan Mitchell Trophy memorial football in Steyning

GIRLS versus boys made for a day of challenging fund-raising.

The annual Ivan Mitchell Trophy memorial football match was held at the Steyning Town Football Club.

Organiser Matt Bailey said: “This year’s match was played between Steyning Old Boys and a group of ladies from across the Sussex area who kindly volunteered their services.

“The match was played in good spirits and, despite the poor weather conditions, a crowd of approximately 100 spectators turned up to cheer the teams on, and show their support to this worthy cause.”

The yearly event started in 2007, in memory of Worthing resident, Ivan Mitchell, who died of cancer aged just 32.

Matt added: “After the match there was a raffle in the clubhouse with some 20 or so prizes kindly donated by local businesses, generous players and fans.

“As things stand the total raised is £980, but with more money due in the coming week, we will top the £1,000 mark, which will be our best total since the first event back in 2007.”

He went on to thank all those who had helped organise the event, which saw the lads win four goals to two.

“I would like to thank the ladies for volunteering to play in the game and also to Steyning Town Football Club for providing the facilities free of charge,” he said,

“I am sure everyone who attended will agree it was a fantastic day.”

All the money raised will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support and St Barnabas Hospice, in Worthing.
