Mrs Pickard is the most elderly of the home's residents. She moved there after she had come to Bognor Regis with her late husband, Kurt. He died in the early 1990s. They had no children.

The couple had met in 1939 when he was a bus driver for London Transport where Mrs Pickard also worked.

They were soon parted when Mr Pickard went missing while he served in the armed forces during the Second World War.

Mrs Pickard believed he had been killed but he turned up at the family home after the war, having been held as a prisoner of war by the Germans.
