Jack doffs his crown and dons a flat cap

Jack – one of Clayton’s iconic windmills – has a flat cap as a temporary replacement for his familiar white cap that was removed last Thursday for major repairs.

Removing the original six-tonne cap that had been on the mill since it was built in the 1860s was technically very challenging but volunteers from the Jack and Jill Windmill Society were delighted with the operation, which involved the use of a large crane and expert advice from engineer Jeremy Hole who comes from a family of millwrights in Burgess Hill.
