James Haggerty Expedition to Kenya

THE memory of a former Bexhill High School pupil will live on with the James Haggerty Expedition to Kenya.

James, 13, died in March 2009 from an undiagnosed cardiac condition, or Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.

Since then his parents Jackie and Russell, of Cooden Drive, have been raising funds for CRY - Cardiac Risk in the Young - which helps research and the supply of diagnostic equipment to hospitals.

Bexhill High School has also supported this charity with fundraising events including a Christmas fair.

Now pupils, parents and staff at Battle Abbey School are raising funds for the James Haggerty Expedition to Kenya, the school's fourth major charitable expedition to the country in recent years.

The expedition team is due to touch down in Kenya on July 12 and pupils will take part in a local commnity project to build the James Haggerty Nursery School from scratch in just under two weeks.

Di Hawksby, acting principal of Bexhill High School, said: "James was a very popular student who always had a smile on his face. He was dedicated to his work and always enjoyed learning.

"He was an excellent example to his peers. James will be sorely missed by the school community."

Dad Russell works at Battle Abbey School and headmaster Roger Clark said: "The school was saddened to hear of Russell and Jackie Haggerty's tragic loss. We were aware that James meant the world to them.

"For the last four years the school has been doing aid projects in Kenya, and Russell, Jackie and some "builder friends" will join this year's school trip and build a nursery school, which will be called the James Haggerty Nursery School."
