Joan’s amazing commitment to helping the young at heart

When Joan Brant found out she was going to receive a special award for helping others, she asked in her typically modest way: “Do I deserve this?”

Joan has such a heart of gold that she was a little overwhelmed by all the attention at a special presentation in Haywards Heath.

Now aged 88, Joan began helping out at Age UK’s Redwood Centre in 1993 and to acknowledge her 20 years of volunteering she was presented with a special thank-you cake and an engraved quartz clock.

Joan began volunteering in the kitchen in her late sixties when the centre was run by Age Concern.

Twenty years on she is still helping out by running the centre’s shop for one day a week.

Centre manager, Donna Parker said: “Joan has been a really loyal volunteer.

“The only time she has ever had off is through sickness.

“Joan is always happy to be helping others and helping out with something.

“When she knew we were going to present her with a special gift, she asked me: ‘Do I deserve this?’

“Of course she does. Joan is a lovely lady and just amazing.”
