Job cuts at Felpham Community College

JOB cuts are under way at Felpham Community College.

Some one in six non-teaching support posts is being axed by headteacher Mark Anstiss.

He said cutting its associate staff team by about 12 positions was necessary because of the current economic climate.

"In order to protect the frontline service we provide to students we will need to make savings in some areas.

"Working closely with the college governors, we have decided where savings can be made in a way we believe will have a minimal impact on the education our students receive.

"The college has operated previously with a large team of 85 non-teaching staff," he said.

"Unfortunately, this level of staffing is no longer sustainable in the current climate and we need to reduce costs by about 15 per cent. We anticipate that this will mean a smaller associate staff team."

The Observer was contacted with details of those whose jobs are about to disappear.

But Mr Anstiss, who took charge of the college last April, said volunteers were being sought for redundancy or early retirement.

"It is unfortunate that as new headteacher I have arrived at a time when these changes are necessary.

"However, I am confident this will not hinder the progress the college is making in providing a first-class education for our students," he said.

He pledged the college's strong tradition of outstanding information communication technology provision would survive the cutbacks.

"We benefit from an extensive Apple network and very good ICT support and we aim to provide the same level of support to students in this area in the future. ICT will continue to be a strength of the college," he added.
