Joe uses first aid skills to save dad's life

A TEENAGE lifesaver put his first-aid skills into action when his father staggered through the front door after suffering a heart attack.

Mick Biggs, 52, who runs the Village Stop caf, in South Street, Lancing, had been to visit a friend when he felt pains in his chest. He went outside to get some fresh air and collapsed to his knees.

He drove home to Tristram Close, Sompting, knowing son Joe '“ a St John Ambulance volunteer and trained Neighbourhood First Responder '“ would be there.

Eighteen-year-old Joe said: "I was at home watching television when Dad walked through the door.

"He had his hands on his chest. I looked at him and knew he was having a heart attack."

Joe has worked with St John Ambulance for more than 10 years, and in December underwent training for the recently-launched Neighbourhood First Responder scheme.

He said: "I had the responder kit on me at the time. I knew what was going on. The training just kicked in."
