Ashna, who left Millais in 2009, spent her lunchtime on Friday December 4 speaking to current students about her journey from school to a life in the media. Ashna, 22, has worked for Sky News, Kiss FM, the BBC and now works as a Production Journalist for ITV News West Country.

Her life in the media has already allowed her to work with a whole host of celebrities including Emma Watson, Cameron Diaz and Warwick Davis.

The transformative effect that alumni can have on students was evident as Ashna spoke about her experiences both at school and work, showing students who sat where she once did, that ‘people like me’ can be successful in life.

Amy Mallows, a current Millais student, said: “Ashna’s talk gave those of us interested in a career in the press a great head start in how we could potentially get involved in the future.”

Historically, whilst private schools have always been supported by a thriving, engaged alumni communities, state schools have lost touch with former students.

However, Millais is now just one of many state schools all over the country harnessing the skills and experience of their former students.

Ashna plans to keep returning to her old school and encourages any former student to do the same.
