PART of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Newick will include the planting of an oak tree.

The 15ft specimen will be planted in the vicinity of the village’s old beech tree which had to be taken down several years ago.

Newick Rootz will undertake the planting and fencing under the guidance of arboriculturalist Peter Thurman.

The cost of the oak will be in the region of £172, plus £70 for delivery and fencing materials. The Horticultural Society may make a donation towards the project and Newick Parish Council has agreed to make up any difference between the amount already budgeted and donations received.

There will be a special ‘Tree Dedication Ceremony’ on Sunday, June 3.

Other jubilee events planned in Newick include an inter-pubs games competition and the intriguing prospect of ‘dancing sheep’.
