At 11am precisely, nearly 400 pupils from Littlehampton Community School took part in the Giant Jump marking the beginning of British Science Year. They were attempting not only to cause a minor earth tremor, but also to break a world record.

School head of science Wendy Sibley said: This is very exciting indeed. This has been the first experience of science for a lot of new pupils here at school.

Syncronised by a clock on British Science Year s website, thousands of children throughout the country were hoping to smash the current world record for the largest number of people leaping simultaneously.
