Keep supporting fair trade

Times are hard - but don't forget fair trade.

Bexhill campaigner Jack Doherty is appealing to shoppers to support fair trade and continue to buy ethically produced goods.

"Don't forget the ones who are suffering the most - the poorest who are at the bottom of the pile.

"There are so many bargains attracting people because of the credit crunch but there aren't any bargains for the poorest when their disposable income is getting less and less."

He spoke ahead of a visit to Bexhill by two fair trade cotton farmers from The Cameroon.

They are to be brought over by the Fair Trade Foundation and will be giving a talk on Friday March 6 at St Richard's College from 7.30pm.

They will also be visiting Eastbourne, Crowborough and Lewes.

"This is the first time they have been outside their own country," said Jack.

"They are fair trade farmers who are benefitting form the few extra pennies that people pay for fair trade cotton. It makes a big difference to them. Their local school had 600 pupils and just five classrooms but the premium from fair trade is going to build another couple of classrooms."
