Kirdford celebrates Queen's 90th birthday with village fete

There was a flurry of activity on the common outside the Foresters Arms in Kirdford on June 12 as marquees were put up.

Five people struggled with an eight foot wide crown on their shoulders. This was a large centre-piece for the event, decorated with flowers gathered by members of the village.

The celebration started at noon and was opened by the oldest resident of the village, Reg Thompson. There was a range of activities including a raffle, tree of promises and a jewellery stall. The children had their own area to enjoy crown making, a bouncy castle and a pin the tail on the corgi. A competition for the best crown amongst the children was won by Amy Jones and Kirdford’s very own Bake Off was won by Bethan Evans in the children’s class and Laura Parker the adult.

Visitors were treated to entertainment from Miss Em, a vintage singer, Kirdford, Ifold and Plaistow Handbell Ringers and a Punch and Judy Show. Overall the weather was a little damp, but this did not affect the mood of the afternoon or the brave picnickers. At the end of the afternoon, the raffle was called and winners included Sara Holmes, Matt Peachey, Eva Bolin and Louise Chapman. The day raised over £1200 for the restoration and refurbishment of playground equipment in the village.

To round off the day, a beacon was lit at 10 pm on the church tower as part of a nationwide idea. From the top of the church a few other beacons were seen in the north and west. This was a wonderful day to celebrate the birthday of the Queen as a community.
