Knees up down the Mermaid

SO many geezers took a ball of chalk down the apples and pears to the Mermaid Suite for last Friday's Cockney Night that £1,000 was raised for St Jude's Women's Refuge.

Pie-mash-and-licker was on the menu together with fish-and-chips with cockles and whelks and jellied eel for the buffet.

Hostess Melanie Boswell drew a total of 104 people to the 12-a-head charity night organised under the umbrella of Mermaid Friends.

She said later: "It was absolutely brilliant. So many people phoned to say thanks and "When are you going to do the next one" that they burned out the battery on my mobile!

"They want us to do another for the Victory celebrations on July 10 but we are not sure whether we will go ahead yet. It is only three months and its a bit close."
